GUIDELINES

  1. Do not forget to thank constantly a person who allowed you to use his or her name or who wrote a reference letter for you. Your message does not only convey that you are thankful. But it will also help you when you need help again in the future when you need it.
  2. Tell the reader the development on your job application, especially if his or her recommendation was helpful.
  3. Tell him or her that you are grateful for his or her help. If you are not sure if the person wrote the recommendation letter or not, do not mention it in the letter.
  4. If you prefer to, give him or her some courtesy in return, but careful not to put him or her in shame.

Dear [Recipients Name],

I write to express my gratitude for the letter of reference you provided on my behalf. I was upset when I had to leave the position as a housekeeper with yourselves, but your letter has allowed me to obtain another position extremely quickly. I am short to start working with the Botham family here in York.

I will miss working with you and your family, and hope that you will quickly settle into your new home in Hawaii. I am sure that the move is best for you and know that you will be happy in your new life.

Sincerely,
