Sample letter to thank someone for writing a recommendation

GUIDELINES

  1. Do not forget to thank constantly a person who allowed you to use his or her name or who wrote a reference letter for you. Your message does not only convey that you are thankful. But it will also help you when you need help again in the future when you need it.
  2. Tell the reader the development on your job application, especially if his or her recommendation was helpful.
  3. Tell him or her that you are grateful for his or her help. If you are not sure if the person wrote the recommendation letter or not, do not mention it in the letter.
  4. If you prefer to, give him or her some courtesy in return, but careful not to put him or her in shame.

Dear [Recipients Name],

As you are aware, I have been looking for a new job for a few weeks now. I thought though that you should be one of the first people to know that I have been successful in gaining a position at a new company in York. I know that my successful application was helped in no small amount by the professional reference that you provided on my behalf. The company looked extremely favorably on my resume after receiving your text.

I am writing this note to thank you for the time you spent writing my reference. I appreciate your support and your continued encouragement very much. Many thanks for all of your assistance and everything that you have done for me.

Sincerely,
